1921 Morgan Silver Dollar Values

The Morgan silver dollar was minted in 1878. Has been issued for American commercial use, mainly Dollar Trade East. The dollar was continuously minted until 1904.

Carson City, Nevada: A group of owners of silver mines had formed a pressure group headed by Congress Richard "Dick Silver" Bland was able to pass a law that made the U.S. Treasury its largest customer.

The vein Comstock, one of the most important strike of silver history, was discovered in Nevada in the late 1850s. The strike put downward pressure on silver prices worldwide. In 1878, Congress passed the Bland-Allison Act, which required the Treasury Department to purchase large amounts of money, and be like coins. For reasons of economy, Treasury chose to strike silver dollars that (From Wikipedia).

In 1861, Carson City became the capital of Nevada Territory, and was the seat of state government when Nevada joined the Union in 1864. The city was founded in 1858 by Abe Curry who later became a the most influential people in the territory, mainly because the city "the mineral wealth derived from money. In the money peak, the population of the mining district of Nevada numbered in the tens of thousands of people, where the scarcity of money he stole routine financial transactions difficult. The money was sent (on the mountains of the Sierra Nevada) the operation of U.S. Mint branch San Francisco, and back after having been converted into foreign currency. This practice has been very costly and risky because the trails were monitored closely by opportunistic thieves.

The owners of the mines of the Territory of Nevada is asking Congress for a new sprig of mint on its outskirts. Legislation to establish a mint in the territory of Nevada was approved March 3, 1863. Abe Curry urged the government to choose from Carson City to accommodate the new currency. In September 1863, the federal government acquired Block 65 by private citizens in Carson City, to build the question of facilities.

The first part of Carson City Mint was the first Dollar 1870-CC Seated Liberty silver.

Government and impact on Carson City Mint

In 1834, the U.S. government established the value of silver and gold at a ratio of 16-1.

The government says the weight of silver or gold that is struck with a nominal dollar value of currencies. Anyone could put their gold to the Mint and receive dollars to ounces of gold. This practice establishes the price that the government was willing to pay per troy ounce Gold and silver (1 oz gold = 16 oz silver = $ 20).

This worked well until the late 1840s and 1850, when the supply of gold has increased dramatically (in California gold-peak), changing the balance of gold and silver. Consequently, money has become rarer over the sellers of gold or silver would sell 16 ounces of silver for private buyers (often foreign) for more than one ounce of gold. Consequently, often preferred to sell their money this way instead of taking one of mints in the United States for converting currency.

As the prolific Comstock Lode (Nevada) and silver mines in Colorado dumped on the open market, the situation was reversed. In mid-1870 buyers, private 16 ounces of silver bought for less than one ounce of gold.

Based on the offer of the Treasury to buy silver at a rate of 16-1, the owners of the money has reached the Carson Mint City and other currencies of the United States, demanding that their silver dollar was minted. They realized that Congress had already adopted Act of 1873 coins, eliminating the silver dollar, in fact, money demonetizing committed our country to a gold standard only. Defenders Silver denounced the law and succeeded in persuading Congress to pass the Bland-Allison Act in 1878.

In Act Bland-Allison, Department Treasury was required to purchase $ 2 to $ 4 million of money per month and mint currency into dollars in order to stabilize the price money at an artificially high. The dollars have been named after George T. Morgan, the designer of the new currency. Consequently, large amounts of Morgan silver dollars were minted, but many do not mix very well, especially in the eastern states, where Silver suffered. There are millions of unused coins ended up in the storage vaults of the Treasury for decades.

More politics

In 1884, a Democrat, Grover Cleveland was elected to the White House. In September 1885, Cleveland has dismissed all employees of the mint and complete closure Carson City Mint.

When Benjamin Harrison took over the presidency by the Republican Party in 1888, Democratic nominees have been replaced by Republicans. In 1889, Carson City has been very good allocated funds for operations start again.

The Bland-Allison Act was amended by the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890. Government Act responsible for the purchase of 4.5 million ounces of silver each month for be paid with Treasury bonds redeemable in gold or silver.

"Unexpected" most bond holders redeemed their tickets gold, depleting the Treasury gold reserves and pulling the country into a severe financial panic in 1893, leading to the repeal of the Sherman Act and much slower production of silver coins.

On June 1, 1893, Mint Director Robert Preston ordered a cessation of strike operations in Carson City Mint.

The supply of dollars of silver bullion was completed in 1904 and silver coinage ceased.

The Pittman Act of 1918 requires the government to convert dollars to silver bullion and then create an equal number of new pieces ingot. Over 270 million silver dollars were melted. Most parts were Carson City silver dollars.

To comply with the Pittman Act, the production of the Morgan silver dollar was resumed in 1921 for a short period of time. You to think this would be the end of history, but "s no. The Act of 1942 money has led to the casting of silver dollars over Morgan. In fact," estimates that over 80% of Morgan Silver Dollars that have occurred are no longer in existence.

In 1962, the U.S. government began selling Treasury bags home with 1000 silver dollars at face value. In early 1970, the General Services Administration packaged and sold most of the Morgans are still owned public, many of which were struck in the city of Carson.

"The dollar Morgan is a U.S. silver coin a dollar. dollars were minted from 1878 to 1904 and again for a further year in 1921. Morgan Dollar is named after its designer, George T. Morgan, who designed the obverse and reverse of the medal. Morgan monogram appears near Lady Liberty's neck on the obverse. The dollar was authorized by the Act Bland-Allison 1878. There is a law of 0900, giving a total silver content of 0.77344 troy ounces (24.057 grams) per piece "

Liberty Morgan
How much is this coin worth?

I have an old S Morgan Liberty silver dollar, but it doesn't have a date on it. I know some of the old 1700s coins can run in the $1000s, but this one doesn't have a listed date; it has stars instead.

Is this a fake or is this special somehow? I know the condition matters when selling coins, so let's say after it's cleaned, it will be in average condition with a few marks and scratches.

Definitely post a photo. There are lots of free places to post, including Yahoo!'s Flickr, Photobucket, and more. Once you've done so, you can edit or repost your question and we can all take another try at identifying it.

Does this "silver dollar" include any legend mentioning ".999 fine", "one troy ounce", or the like? If so, it's a privately minted "silver round," not a coin, and in most cases just worth its value in silver metal. (However, most silver rounds haven't seen circulation, which is implied in your description of this item's condition.)

Here's an "allexperts.com" post where one of the experts there was asked to identify an item like yours, and, without seeing it, suggested that it may well have been a silver round:
