How can I sell my rare coins and know that I am getting what they are worth?
I have quite a few U.S. Rare coins of all kinds, from 1886 dollar pieces to Standing liberty quarters to copper pennies. I dont know anything about the coins or coin collecting. I found most of them while going through some things that used to belong to grandfather. Anyways, I do know from just doing a little research online that some of the coins could be worth some decent money. However none of the coins are certified and they are all in circulated condition. How can I go about trying to sell the coins in a way so that I know Im getting what they are really worth and not just being ripped off by someone who know I dont know anything about them?
The first link is a beginner's guide to grading coins. It would take a lot of practice to get really good at it, but this site will certainly help you to approximate the grade of your coins. The second link has values for all certified US coins. You can use these values to get a good idea what yours may be worth. A dealer will not give you the full value as he is trying to make a profit as well, but you would be able to sell them all in one lot. I would recommend the book in the third link as it gives lots of information you may need including retail prices. It is an annual book, and you might be able to find it on Amazon, eBay, many bookstores, and even your local library. There is also a companion "blue book" with wholesale prices. I hope this helps.
