Facing Perjury Charges, Kwame Kilpatrick Starts Defense Fund

Embattled Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will soon announce that he is establishing a legal defense fund, a spokesman confirmed Wednesday.

Chris Garrett of Impact Strategies, the firm hired to speak for Kwame Kilpatrick’s legal team, said it would be a not-for-profit fund.

He declined to say whether city contractors would be asked to contribute or whether some contributions would be denied to avoid conflicts of interest.

He also said that Impact Strategies - like the mayor’s legal defense team led by Dan Webb, a former U.S. Attorney - would not be paid with city funds.

For his part, Kwame Kilpatrick, 37, says he “looks forward to being cleared” in the perjury case currently pending against him.

He has been charged with perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct. His former chief of staff and advisor, Christine Beatty, with whom he allegedly had an affair, is also facing perjury and obstruction of justice charges.

The charges follow the publication of sexually explicit text messages between Kilpatrick and Beatty, who may have used the alias Carmen Slowsky.

The pair had denied a romantic relationship under oath during a whistle-blowers’ trial last summer - a claim that could come back to haunt them now.

The second youngest mayor of a major U.S. city, Kwame Kilpatrick could face up to 15 years in prison and be expelled from office.

The Kwame Kilpatrick Apology Remix

First, there was Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s affair with Christine Beatty and the text message probe that exposed an internal scandal.

Then, adding fuel to the fire, his dalliances with Carmen Slowsky (whoever that is) during a trip he made on Martin Luther King, Jr., Day.

He’s had such an absurd run, you absolutely could not make this stuff up. But you can make up viral videos parodying the troubled mayor.

His image tarnished more and more by the day, Kwame Kilpatrick has apologized publicly for his behavior… remix style. See below …

Who is Carmen Slowsky?

That’s the question of the hour in the increasingly scandalous life of Kwame Kilpatrick, the mayor of Detroit, who had a woman other than his wife with him at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, N.C. before speaking at the Martin Luther King Prayer Breakfast Friday morning.

Organizers? Not pleased.

The embattled, scandal-prone Kilpatrick was reportedly seen in the North Carolina city with some woman named Carmen Slowsky.

Kwame Kilpatrick and Carmen Slowsky had enjoyed champagne and a whirlpool bath together at a cost of more than $500.

A copy of the hotel invoice shows a stay arranged for two.

Things are going from bad to worse for Kwame Kilpatrick.

This comes after Michigan prosecutors launched an investigation into allegations that Kwame Kilpatrick lied under oath about an extramarital affair with his chief of staff, Christine Beatty.

Kilpatrick has said the affair with Beatty is over, and some say he is unlikely to be charged, but political damage lingers.

Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy icked Kilpatrick up at the airport, saw him at the breakfast and again at dinner, where he was alone each time. Yet questions about Carmen Slowsky continue to hound the mayor.

“I think it’s very disappointing to have this happen,” Bellamy said.

Kwame Kilpatrick’s speech was a chance to energize the community around mentoring and tutoring our youth. The event was meant to focus on Dr. King’s legacy and now the focus is on this.”

So who is Carmen Slowsky? Is that an alias for Christine Beatty or someone else, or is she a real person?

Detroit Mayor’s Affair Could End in Perjury Charge

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his chief of staff, Christine Beatty, lied about their relationship last summer during a police whistle-blower trial that has cost the cash-strapped city more than $9 million.

The false testimony potentially exposes them to perjury charges. This makes Tony Rezko’s connection to Barack Obama seem tame.

Kwame Kilpatrick and Christine Beatty denied in August that they had a sexual relationship. But a series of text messages show romantic banter as well as them planning - and recounting - sexual liaisons.

The messages are also at odds with the testimony that they did not fire Deputy Police Chief Gary Brown in 2003. Texts show Christine Beatty recalling the “decision we made to fire Gary Brown.”

The Kilpatrick-Christine Beatty relationship and Brown’s dismissal are central to the whistle-blower suit filed by Brown and Harold Nelthrope, a former Detroit police officer and mayoral bodyguard.

The cops accuse Kwame Kilpatrick of retaliating against them because of their roles in an internal investigation of the mayor’s security team — a probe that potentially could have exposed their affair.

The newspaper examined nearly 14,000 text messages - on Christine Beatty’s city-issued pager - covering two months each in 2002-2003.
